Jeep's New Rubicon 392 Concept

Jeep's New Rubicon 392 Concept

Details from Hendrick Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Wilmington, NC

Sometimes timing can tell you a lot about things. Take Jeep's new Rubicon 392 Concept, for example. It was announced on July 14, 2020, the very same day that Ford unveiled its new Bronco 4x4. In case you aren't aware, the new Bronco is a very Wrangler-like vehicle that was designed to attract the same segment of buyers who traditionally opt for Jeeps. The fact that the Rubicon 392 Concept was announced on the same day as the Bronco speaks volumes. But, curious minds want to know: does the Bronco look like serious competition for Jeep? In our opinion: nope. Here are a few items you can expect on the Rubicon 392 Wrangler that are NOT appearing on the 2021 Bronco.

It's got a Hemi

The 2021 Bronco has two engine choices: a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder and a twin-turbocharged 2.7-liter V-6. Both fine choices but the Rubicon 392 Wrangler is slated to have FCA's tremendously popular 392 Hemi. This is an engine that offers 450 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque. For those who don't know, HEMI is a reference to the shape of the combustion chamber heads inside the engine. It refers to a "hemispherical design" which allows a reduction in heat loss in the cylinders, room for bigger valves, and superior performance. Jeep claims that the Rubicon 392 concept can get from zero to 60 mph in less than five seconds. Keep in mind, this is a SUV!

It can make its presence known

With the overwhelming popularity of the dual mode exhaust systems on the 2017 (and later) Hemi V8 Chargers and Challengers, the Rubicon 392 Concept will offer the same system. The advantage of the dual mode exhaust system is that it allows drivers to make some noise when it is opened up, but still not bother anyone under low-performance conditions. It does this with electronic valves (located in the exhaust) that close when the engine is under light throttle situations. When you put the pedal to the metal, though, those valves open up and the wild animal roars.

Beefy drivetrain and suspension

The folks at FCA know that Jeep wouldn't be a Jeep without serious off-road performance goodies, and the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 Concept doesn't disappoint. To deliver unrivaled 4x4 capabilities, the Rubicon 392 Concept employs a Selec-Track® full-time two-speed transfer case, heavy-duty Dana® 44 axles, Tru-Lok® electric front and rear locking differentials, a Mopar® 2-inch lift kit, monotube FOX® shocks, a Warn® winch and custom rock rails. When equipped with the Mopar® 2-inch lift kit, 17-inch beadlock wheels and 37-inch mud tires, the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 Concept provides an amazing 13.25 inches of ground clearance and 34 inches of water fording capability.
