2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee vs 2019 Toyota Highlander near Jacksonville, NC

The 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2019 Toyota Highlander stand as two of the best modern mid-size SUVs currently on the market. Even in the competitive SUV market, there is no surprise that both of these vehicles close out top slots due to their solid powertrains, features, and technology integrated into their design. With both of these exceptional vehicles up for grabs, which one do we suggest to you when we get down to the details? Continue reading on to find out more about what we think of this matchup.

2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee Power & Handling

The Grand Cherokee comes packed with power and multiple options of what powertrain to use to fuel your drive. Standard with the first 5 trim models comes a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine that uses chain-driven DOHC 24-valve system that has hydraulic end-pivot roller rockers operating on a variable-valve timing. This engine pushes out an impressive 295 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque and comes in either a two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive configuration. With the Limited, Overland and Summit trims comes an optional upgrade to a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 engine that improves the torque to 420 pound-feet and offers better overall fuel efficiency. Another optional engine upgrade for the Limited, Trailhawk, Overland and Summit trims is a 5.7-liter V8 engine with Fuel Saver Technology and variable valve timing. This engine runs on an eight-speed automatic and produces an improved 360 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. If you are looking for even more power, the SRT trim comes packed with a 6.4-liter V8 that pushes out an even higher 475 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. Even better at the final trim level, the Trackhawk pushes out an astounding 707 horsepower and 645 lb-ft of torque with its 6.2-liter supercharged V8 engine.

2019 Toyota Highlander Power & Handling

With the 2019 Toyota Highlander comes a few different powertrain options that are decent for what is on the market today. The standard engine that is housed in the base LE trim model is a 2.7-liter 4-cylinder that pushes out 185 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque; this is a sufficient amount of power for this SUV, but doesn't quite measure up to what we find in the 2019 Grand Cherokee falling over 100 hp lower on the scale and nearly 100 torque as well. This 2019 Highlander's baseline engine also only comes with two-wheel drive configuration compared to the Grand Cherokee's also having four-wheel drive configuration to choose from. Throughout the rest of the engine options, the Highlander starts to approach comparable horsepower and torque, but at later trim levels the 3.5-liter V6 Toyota offers don't measure up with the V8 selection that 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee brings you.

2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee Features & Design

The 2019 Grand Cherokee comes with a multitude of trim levels and feature options that gives an impressive customization system for the SUV. Furthermore, the base trim level holds a large grouping of standard features including 17-inch wheels, rear parking sensors, keyless entry and ignition, dual-zone automatic climate control, and others. The base trim level also has impressive technology worked into the leather-wrapped steering wheel that has voice recognition, adaptive cruise control, electronic vehicle information center and more as well as an infotainment center based around a 7-inch touchscreen display that has smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on a six-speaker audio system. Further down the trim levels, there is even more that gets added on that impressed us, such as heated steering wheel and seats, 20-inch wheels with specialized performance based tires, upgraded suspension, power sunroof, power liftgate and more. Rounding out the vehicle overall, the safety features offered at the base trim level is also very impressive including features like blind-spot monitoring, rear-park assist, and more.

2019 Toyota Highlander Features & Design

The 2019 Toyota Highlander does come with a great selection of features that we look for in a standard mid-range SUV. Starting with the base trim level we see common features matching the Jeep Grand Cherokee with adjustable driver's seat, rearview camera and a smaller 6.1-inch touchscreen with USB ports, Bluetooth integration with a six-speaker sound system. However, there are a lot of core features that the Grand Cherokee brings to the table, including dual-zone automatic climate control, leatherbound steering wheel with technology integration, blind-spot monitoring, keyless entry/ignition, the rear-parking assistance, and others. If you are looking to upgrade in trim levels this may not be as much of a problem to get some of these features, but a good number of them aren't offered at all even at higher trim levels. The higher trim levels do end up matching a good number of the Grand Cherokee's features such as a navigation system, 110-volt power outlet, driver seat memory, rear parking sensors, automatic wipers and others as well.

Conclusions

Being able to establish a strong SUV to contend with the other top picks for the 2019 market is no easy feat, and the 2019 Toyota Highlander and especially the 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee stand out from the rest. Both vehicles have reliable and potent powertrains, but the Grand Cherokee stands supreme with its high-end engine selection and base powertrain packing significantly more power and torque on each option. The Toyota Highlanders does, however, offer a good selection of features, but the Grand Cherokee offers more and brings a lot of the advanced features and safety functions either as standard with the base trim level or in early trim levels. Overall, with the powertrain options and feature selection, we are definitely giving the win to the 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee in this matchup.
